Governor Christie: ARC Tunnel

Governor Chris Christie holds a press conference regarding the recommendation of the ARC Project Executive Committee to terminate the ARC Project based on a 30-day review which confirmed the project is expected to substantially exceed its current budget at the Statehouse in Trenton, NJ on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010. Based on calculations by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the New Jersey Transit (NJ Transit), the final budget is expected to top billion and could exceed as much as billion, compared to the project’s current budget of .7 billion.

    – as long as the oil and auto industries shell out a lot of lobbying dollars for it… it will get done. There aren’t a lot private lobbying dollars in a train tunnel and that’s the real reason it got killed.

    – exactly NJ growth will be stunted… and the infrastructure costs will only go up later. Penny wise and pound foolish.

    Amidat says:

He said it was flawed because it wouldn’t allow for a connection to the east side of Manhattan? How comical!?!? He says it was too expensive but then saying it is flawed because of something that would add billions to the cost. Short-sightedness like this is why the 2nd avenue subway is just coming to fruition (and only part of the way). Eventually another tunnel will have to be built if the tri-state wants to continue growing…and guess what?? It will cost MORE than it does now!!

    Amidat says:

    – oh please… he only is talking tough because people in transit are not big campaign donors. He has no problem in giving “incentives” (corporate welfare) for companies to move to NJ… but can’t pay for a tunnel that would pay for itself over many generations after he dies with all the increase in business throughout the region. Those companies can pick up and move when their incentives are used up. A tunnel won’t move barring a natural catastrophe..
