For parents and students summertime is a time of vacations, no school, and great weather – generally an all around good time to kick back and relax. If you have a college bound student anytime in the next few years, there are some real opportunities that you are going to waste if you don’t do some active planning during the school break.
First, you should be clear that if you do not have a large six figure investment account set aside for college, if somehow the last 16 or 17 years flew by as did your good intentions for saving for your child’s education, then you are in need of “short-term” college planning. While this planning will even work for parents with kids already in college, ideally we like to see moms and dads of sophomores and juniors. I am always amazed when I get the question from the parents of Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors if it is too soon to come see us for planning. My standard response is “I wish you would have come in 10 years ago- NO, IT IS NEVER TOO SOON!”
There is income planning, asset planning, and college aid profiling that can be done if you start today. With every passing day the opportunities for increasing financial aid may be passing you by. Summer time is the best time for parents of sophomores and juniors to be preparing for the strategies as many of these things need to be wrapped up before you base financial year starts.
Summer is also a great time to put your kids to work. If you have the opportunity to receive financial aid (if you don’t know, you better find out and DON’T ASSUME) your child can earn up to $ 2577 without negatively affecting your financial aid. If you are a Category III and will not qualify for financial aid, there are no limits on what the student may earn. Having your child earn money to pay for their incidental expenses is a great way to have them participate in this major expense you are about to incur for their future. Having some “skin” in the game may be a good way to see the importance of this nest step of their academic career. Use the 50-50 rule (or some derivation) which allows them to keep half for spending money today and half gets saved for college. This also instills wonderful saving disciplines that will last a lifetime.
This is also a good time for juniors to review test scores and academic short comings. Increasing SAT and ACT scores by even a couple of points can open up admissions to schools that may be out of reach with current scores. More schools mean more opportunity to find financial aid. There are great companies around that specialize in helping students improve their SAT and ACT test taking skills. It may be money well spent.
If working is not in your child’s summer plans, then volunteering should be. Remember schools are looking at the complete student picture, not just their academic prowess. Volunteering can certainly add value to a college application and may possibly give you opportunities for additional aid.
As you can see, while summertime is a great time to enjoy, it is also a great time to get your college planning in gear. Don’t let this time pass by without doing anything, because as you know, it will before you know it!

As your child prepares to head off to college, probably the last thing on his or her mind (and yours) is health insurance. But getting sick or injured away from home can be an unpleasant experience–more so if your child doesn’t know his or her health-care options. You’ll want to make sure that your child’s health insurance is in place before you pack up the car. There are basically two ways to insure your child’s health while at college: your family health plan or a health plan provided through the college.
Your family health plan
Most family health plans will cover your child until 20 to 24 years of age as a full-time student who’s still dependent on you, regardless of whether he or she lives at home. If you have a traditional indemnity plan (i.e., one that provides coverage no matter which doctor you choose), then your child should be able to see any doctor near campus, and your insurer should cover a certain percentage of the expenses as set forth in your plan. The situation is more complicated when you have a health maintenance organization (HMO) plan and your child’s college is not nearby. In this case, your child may need to schedule appointments with his or her primary care doctor during school breaks and other visits home. But it may be difficult or impossible for your child to visit his or her primary care doctor in an urgent situation.
If your child isn’t covered under your family health plan because he or she no longer fits the definition of a dependent child, your child may be eligible for coverage under the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA). This is an individual plan that’s based on the benefits in your group plan.
Under COBRA, your child will be eligible for coverage up to 36 months.
The college health plan
The other option is for you to purchase health insurance coverage through your child’s college. Many colleges offer low-cost health plans for students that may even be less expensive than continuing coverage through your existing family plan. These health plans, though not as comprehensive as some policies, are usually enough to get by on, even if your child becomes seriously ill or has a major accident. The reason that these plans are less expensive than your own plan is the cap they place on total benefits paid (e.g., $ 250,000). Make sure that you know what the maximum benefit is and that you’re comfortable having coverage up to that limit.
The cost and level of coverage of college health plans can vary greatly from one school to the next. Plans are usually designed specifically for each individual college, and the health services available on campus and in the community often determine what coverage the college can offer. State laws may also play a significant role in the cost and level of coverage.
Questions for your college health plan
Because college health plans can vary widely in their coverage, you’ll want to consider the following questions before you sign your child up:
Is the plan an HMO, or can your child use any health provider?
What services are offered free or at low cost in the campus health center?
Is the campus health center open 24 hours? How is it staffed?
Are emergency-room visits covered in all situations or only in specific situations?
Does the plan cover your child when he or she is on vacation (e.g., spring break)?
Does the plan cover your child during the summer?
Are hospitals in the college area accessible and utilized?
Does the plan include mental health treatment?
What pre-existing conditions are excluded?
Are there deductibles and coinsurance to be paid?
What is the maximum benefit amount?

Pasadena, CA: Art Center College of Design and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) today announced the launch of The Design Accelerator, an incubator aimed at helping startups grow by merging great design, cutting-edge technology and business strategy to create innovation. The Accelerator initially will be housed within Idealab, which is well known for creating and operating pioneering companies in its own right.
“In today’s economy, artists and designers play a vital role as creative leaders and catalysts for innovation and change,” said Art Center President Lorne M. Buchman. “Integrating technology, design and business, The Design Accelerator creates an opportunity for Art Center and Caltech alumni to expand on what they learned as students and provides a stimulating space for their concepts to become viable businesses.”
The Accelerator is an integral part of Art Center’s 2011–2016 Strategic Plan. Understanding students’ concerns about employment prospects following graduation, The Accelerator fills a critical gap by giving students and alumni the opportunity to develop their concepts into sustainable and commercial ventures—a bridge between academic and professional life.
Fred Farina, Caltech’s chief innovation officer, adds, “We know that making connections across different areas fuels innovation, and that’s why we’re excited about this collaboration. The combination of our complementary but very different perspectives in a startup team promises powerful results.”
The Design Accelerator benefits from its prime location in Pasadena, Calif., which has become a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship with vibrant creative, technology and business communities, enriched by the presence of Art Center, Caltech, angel investors and venture capitalists.
“By virtue of their respective international leadership positions in design and technology, Art Center and Caltech are ideally positioned to establish a groundbreaking model with tremendous influence in the business and higher education sectors,” said Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard.
After an extensive application process, The Accelerator has selected promising early stage, design-driven technology companies from the Art Center and Caltech communities to participate in the intensive three-month program. During that period, the fledgling companies will be located in the Pasadena offices of Idealab, a technology-focused incubator.
Idealab CEO Bill Gross sits on the boards of both Art Center and Caltech and is thrilled to be part of their partnership. “Having started more than 100 companies,” Gross said, “Idealab is excited to help bring The Design Accelerator to life, further growing the Southern California startup community. We look forward to sharing with young entrepreneurs the lessons we’ve learned from 17 years of starting companies.”
Businesses are selected for The Accelerator based on their ability to demonstrate the value of human-centered design in support of advanced technologies, and the potential to disrupt the marketplace. Startups in the first class include a foldable electric bike company, a healthcare company focused on using 3D scanning and printing to provide custom-fit medical products and a web-based company that allows consumers to custom design their own household products.
Leading The Design Accelerator are co-founders Mark Breitenberg and Erik Hovanec. Breitenberg is the special assistant to the president of Art Center College of Design and was hired by President Buchman to develop the initiative. He was formerly the provost at California College of the Arts and was president of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design until 2011. Hovanec has extensive startup experience. He has been the CEO of LeisureLink, Inc. and was an early executive at both Green Dot Corp. and GoTo.com/Overture Services, Inc. He also advises and is an investor in early stage companies in Los Angeles.
“Great design creates emotional bonds and a seamless experience between technology and users,” said Breitenberg. “Both startups and the venture community are beginning to recognize the competitive advantage that design brings to business.”
The Design Accelerator is the first among Southern California incubators to focus on design. According to Hovanec, “We are focused on using the power of great design to create market disruption, and we believe that markets reaward disruption. It’s the same phenomenon we see with Apple’s smart phones or Pinterest’s website.”
Teams in The Accelerator’s immersive environment will be provided with seed capital from a related investment fund, as well as professional mentorship in design and technology drawn from the world-class faculties of Art Center and Caltech. Mentors in marketing and business strategy from the local community have also joined the initiative. The companies will employ low-cost startup methods and have access to Art Center’s preeminent rapid prototyping and 3D modeling facilities. The goal by the end of the three-month term is that each startup will be positioned to raise larger rounds of funding from angel, strategic or venture capital investors.
