Morgan Neville Directs 'The Sound of Silk' Documentary

Boston, MA (PRWEB) January 15, 2014

Award-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom) is directing ‘The Sound of Silk’, an exciting new documentary about the Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma, the world-renowned cellist.

“’The Sound of Silk’ will serve as a lens for larger questions about cultural identity in a global society, and the potential for individuals to act as catalysts for change,” said Neville. “Like the ancient Silk Road itself, ‘The Sound of Silk’ will make the foreign familiar while challenging long-held notions of identity and our place in the world.”

The Silk Road Ensemble was founded in 2000 under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma. Since then, its members have come from more than 20 countries. It has performed in 119 cities in 30 countries, generated more than 80 new works, recorded 60 pieces of music, and just released its fifth CD, A Playlist Without Borders.

“Music offers us a tool to code our inner lives – our shared empathy, passion, humor and aspirations,” said Yo-Yo Ma. “Focusing on the Ensemble musicians, their music and their unique mode of cultural exchange, ‘The Sound of Silk’ captures a vibrant world of cross-cultural collaboration, focusing on what we share, rather than what divides us.”

Laura Freid, Silk Road Project Executive Director and CEO, said, “During our 15th anniversary year, it’s an honor for the Silk Road community to welcome Morgan Neville into our family. ‘The Sound of Silk’ will help further our founding vision: to connect the world’s neighborhoods by bringing together artists and audiences from all over the world.”

‘The Sound of Silk’ is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Pershing Square Foundation and other contributors. For further information and updates, visit the Silk Road Project website.
